Geography 98/198 paper topics: Missing - Monday, March 15th, 2004. Papers should be approximately 1-2 pages in length, double spaced, 12 point times or similar font. Due in class: Monday, March 29thth, 2004. Option A: American interests abroad often conflict with local interests. While these can be political, or social, they usually boil down to economic issues. As we saw in the film intervention around these issues by the US can have severe consequences for the local people. To what extent should we Americans be expected to give up parts of our lifestyle in order to make the lives of others better? What if it meant that the US was reduced to the living standards of a Third world country? What are some other options in which everyone might be able to win?
Option B: We see in this movie an example of mass murder conducted by a political group (the new Chilean government). What should be done to resolve situations like this? Is punishment of the guilty parties or rehabilitation of the community more important? Are the two necessarily mutually exclusive? Why or why not? |
